As I mentioned last week, your choice of techniques to use to manage your stress depends on the situation and whether or not you have control over it. In my book the techniques I cover to use for situations in which you have little to no control include: deep breathing with "re-lax"; quick relaxation/body scan; body scan + focused breathing; timeout; peaceful place imagery; mindfulness/present moment awareness; and The Pump. Deep breathing was outlined in my blog of 8/1/09.
In another section of my book I present techniques and tips for managing stressors under your control. Topics covered include: negative thinking; worry; anxiety; perfectionism; expectations; guilt; anger; time management; boundaries; balance; and self care.
I also present tips that have been useful for the following challenging specific situations: traffic; overwhelm; feelings of depression; bringing work home; sleep issues; stress eating; difficult economic times; dealing with criticism; and making difficult decisions.
My book contains beautiful photography along with sayings I have found useful in managing stress. I expect my book to be available between the middle and end of September 2009. I will let you know when and how to order it.
In the meantime, let me know if you have a particular interest in any of the topics listed above that I cover in my book. I will address those areas first; otherwise I will follow my planned approach for this blog, which is structured differently from the book.
