PEACEFUL PLACE IMAGERY

Imagery is a tool using our natural thought processes in combination with our senses, actively imagining what we might see, hear, smell, or touch in our imaginary scenes. A common type of imagery is referred to as "Peaceful Place" imagery. This is useful when you need to distract yourself from some unpleasant situation or for relaxation during a break or other selected times.

For this technique you would start by getting comfortable, preferably in a quiet location where you will not be disturbed, taking a few deep breaths to help you settle in. Next imagine yourself in a place that you would find peaceful and safe. This place can be either real or imaginary and you can imagine surrounding yourself with whatever you think would be necessary to feel safe. Once you have chosen the location spend time imagining in detail what sights, sounds, fragrances or aromas, and sensations such as temperature or breezes and the the like you notice in this place. You can imagine other people around you or you may choose to imagine yourself alone. Continue to focus on this place taking in all the peaceful feelings you create for yourself for as long as you wish or as time allows. It is wise to bring yourself back to the present moment slowly. This can be done by focusing on your breathing, then noticing your body and its contact with your environment, and eventually opening your eyes and slowly returning to your daily activities.

You may have doubts about your ability to do this type of imagery. Actually we have all done some type of imagery, possibly daydreaming about some event or person, planning a vacation, or even worrying. Worry is imagery that focuses on the negative thoughts about what might happen. You can choose to focus on positive and pleasant thoughts and enjoy the moment through using this peaceful place imagery.
